My Senior Dog Has Progressively Experienced Bowel Incontinence Of Soft, Formed Stool. She Seems To Be …

My senior dog has progressively experienced bowel incontinence of soft, formed stool. She seems to be unaware as a small amount will just fall out as she is walking. She will be 15 this year, is very house trained, and continues to go outside majority of the time. Over the past month it seems to happen more frequently and I’m not sure how to manage it. We also have small children and I’m dreading the day my 18 month old finds it before me.

Newly Paralyzed Cat/ Bowel Movements – We Have A Newly Paralyzed Cat And She Hasn’t …

Newly paralyzed cat/ bowel movements – we have a newly paralyzed cat and she hasn’t had a bowel movement since Tues 3/17 pm. Hasn’t ate much since then, but also taking gaba & prednisolone. Eating wet food since accident. F/U with vet today to get more advice on manipulating. She’s spicy and difficult to handle at times so I’m worried how to make this work. Hoping to consider stool softener or laxative of some sort to help her with this process. Any recommendations ? I came across your video for the kitty that has had years of constipation and wanted to send a message. Thank you in advance!

    Hello,
I think it’s best to see your vet asap. I’m worried that the paralysis is affecting the go tract and your cats ability to defecate normally. Any cat with this should be on a canned food diet and maybe even laxatives to keep the feces soft. You also need to learn how to palpate your cats abdomen so you can monitor for constipation and bladder size. Good luck. These cats need a lot of vet oversight.

I did yesterday- they had NO ONE there to be able to show me how to do this. And actually said they couldn’t do it from the outside, which in the short time I’ve been researching, I know isn’t true: they told me to try miralax overnight and if she didn’t poop by today we have to intervene. Sadly, our cat is extremely touchy and is not wanting us to manipulate her at all. We didn’t feel right letting her go without trying, but I feel like we have no option at this point because if she will not let us express, we can’t keep relying on medical intervention for many reasons. Thank you for taking the time to reply, 🙁

I Rushed My 1 Year 1 Month Male Cat To The Vet Last March 16 And He Was On …

I rushed my 1 year 1 month male cat to the vet last March 16 and he was on catheter until the 21st. Reason for the catheterization is a urinary blockage due to stones. He is currently urinating well everytime he goes to his litter box but my only concern is, he only pooped last March 17. Until today he wasn’t still pooping. We had xray and ultrasound done. Everything is normal as per the vet, he has a gassy stomach. Considering this, he hasn’t pooped now for nearly 5 days, including this 2 days catheter removal. He is also dehydrated despite drinking a lot of water. He is looking at me whenever I eat, he is meowing, he swallows the food (wet/dry royal canin urinary SO) as advised by vet. But he sniffs a little amount of food such as fish and chicken and then taste small portion and will not eat afterwards. He is not vocalizing pain as well and straining on the box, he is also not vomiting. He can jump up our sink to drink water and also walks and is purring. Can you recommend me anything I can give him for him to eat voluntarily and be able to poop?

    Hello,

I would be worried that your cat is not eating enough to form feces. You should see your vet do them to help you with either an appetite stimulant and dietary options to help encourage eating. They also need to do a thorough examination.

AGASACA Diagnosis And Estimate

Our dog Roo was recently diagnosed with a dermal melanoma and during her oncology consult at it was also discovered that she has AGASACA. We are exploring cost saving options and were wondering what others have paid at certain surgical centers for abdominal ultrasounds and thoracic radiographs and potential removal surgery.

My Almost 8 Year Old Golden/Lab Mix Has The Worst Breath I Have Ever Smelt. We …

My almost 8 year old Golden/Lab mix has the worst breath I have ever smelt. We have looked in his mouth and do not see evidence of any tooth infections or abscessed teeth. Our Current vet told us that “some dogs stink.” It is to the point that we cannot invite people over our home with the fear that he will touch them and make them smell. It is nauseating. We were told they could put him under and evaluate further for $3k + but that is not in the budget. Are there any other solutions? Can you help @Jarrettsvillevet? @jarretsvillevet@gmail.com

To add: This started about 2 years ago but has gotten progressively worse over the past 6 months- 1 year. We have switched his dog food brand to see if that would help but he has always been on lamb and rice as he has a chicken sensitivity. I have tried powders, drops in his water, cleansing wipes, and raw hides with CHG. Nothing even touches the smell. I would describe it as a decaying wound smell.

Hi Allison, Jarrettsville Vet’s dentals are usually about half of that if that’s what’s needed. You can call the clinic and make an appointment for an exam and have one of our vets take a look.

My 12 Year Old Border Collie Mix Has Had This Sore For Awhile Now On Her Hind …

My 12 year old border collie mix has had this sore for awhile now on her hind leg. After some research, I believe it’s a sebaceous gland tumor. Can someone confirm? What should I put on it? I try to be as organic as possible. She keeps licking at it. Should I take her to the vet?

    Hello,

We shouldn’t ever diagnose via a photo. We should only make a presumptive diagnosis in person after a history and examination is completed. A confirmatory diagnosis is made with a biopsy submitted to a pathologist for microscopic evaluation. But this does appear to be consistent with a benign skin growth.

Hi Dr. Magnifico, I Have An 18 Yr Old Male Cat (Eddie) That Has Been Having Trouble …

Hi Dr. Magnifico,
I have an 18 yr old male cat (Eddie) that has been having trouble breathing because of an obstruction in his nasal cavity. Eddie’s primary Vet Dr. Klutz at Abby Animal hospital preformed an x-ray and determined he would probaly need a CAT scan and rhinoscopy for a better diagnosis. I was referred to AVIMO in Hunt Valley and went for a consultation. That visit cost over $800 with some blood work. I was given an estimate for the CAT scan procedure of $4426.00 to $5258.00. This is a lot for me to pay out at one time since I have 5 other cats that are in their senior years with some health issues of their own. If your practice or if you know of another facility that can provide a cheaper price I would appreciate your input.

    Hello,
I just had this conversation yesterday with a client.
Here’s my thoughts on this situation.

Most cats this age are more likely to have a mass in the nose than a polyp or anything else benign. Age matters in statistical likelihood of a disease. Or, it can be infection or long term inflammation. Both of these have treatment options. I would start with them. I like cerenia nasal drops. Nebulizer treatments and even an inhaler. We also have options like atopica and Solensia.
Next we try rotating antibiotics. Like doxycycline and azithromycin.

The he reality is you will likely spend a lot of money on a diagnostic that leaves you little to no good treatment options. We HAVE to talk about that BEFORE we ask people to spend money (often that they do not have) on expensive diagnostics.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck.

    Hello,
There are a lot of reasons cats get a urinary blockage. Infection, bladder stones, stress, bleeding, and they usually happen over a prolonged time period which makes treatment and resolution more difficult. Your cat needs help in trying to figure out what caused this and they also need more time in helping to resolve it.
In some cases an xray (for stones) or ultrasound (for masses in the bladder) provide better clues.

If you cannot afford these ask about sq fluids at home, an oral antibiotic and either an nsaid or steroid to help with inflammation. I also teach people how to palpate their cats bladder to monitor for blocking.
In some cases we look for options for longer term urinary catheterization at a more cost effective way.

Diet is also very important. Ideally s canned urinary prescription diet or feed only high quality canned food with water added.

There is not a one size fits all answer butthese cats need immeidate and long term help.

Thank you.. I’ve been monitoring him all morning he keeps going into litter box does small pee spots and then get comfortable and sits when I touch his stomach / check his bladder I do feel a firm mess still and it feels way bigger than a golf ball.

I Had My Dog In The Room With Me And Then I Noticed Her Doing Reverse …

I had my dog in the room with me and then I noticed her doing reverse sneezing and it also sounded as though she had a hairball as it sounded like some coughing noise. I took her outside and then an hour later her face is swollen. We didn’t see her eat anything on the camera while I was working. The swelling has gone down a lot but still there. She vomited 4 to 5 times today (white and yellow vomit) and very little amounts. She ate a little bit of rice today and drank water. She seems uncomfortable as she keeps moving her sleeping position and keeps kicking while resting. We suspect it could be possible she ate mouse poop as we saw a mouse run through the yard. The image is of her swelling yesterday and it went down significantly with benadryl. She still has swelling but not verh noticeable. She did have dental surgery on January 30th but it shouldn’t cause an issue now. Please advise what we should do as the vet wasn’t very helpful and said to go to the hospital.

    Hello,
Im not sure what is causing the facial swelling but i would be worried about it continuing and possibly causing trouble with breathing. As long as that is not happening it is probably not an emergency.
My first guess is an allergic reaction (for example and spider bite or vaccine reaction), but, it certainly can also be due to dental disease or recent dental procedure.

I recommend you see your vet about this.

Free Or Low Cost Spay/vaccine Options For Rescued Kittens?

Hello, my family recently rescued two adorable barn kittens from a local Harford County Farm. Their mom unfortunately, was not attentive and abandoned the litter, so we have taken the kittens in and have been bottlefeeding. They’re thriving and seem happy and healthy. I know that Baltimore County has free or low cost spay and vaccine options for rescued pets through the Humane Society. Does Harford County currently have any programs like this? Thank you!

Harford County doesn’t have it’s own program but ShadowCatsTNR.org can help you for a lower cost. There are lower cost clinics like All Paws in Perryville or Brandywine Valley SPCA
