I really would love to have a pet Chinchilla but I was wondering if they need a cage or if I can just keep them free in the house and have a room with all their stuff in it.

I think regardless of what type of pet a person gets, you need to do your research on proper care, environment, enxpenses, etc. beforehand. I suggest going to the local library and reading up on chinchillas and what costs and care go into having a healthy one. Best of luck.

Yes, I agree with Sarah. Do research. All rodents need enclosures. Plus a lot more specific to their species.

My Girlfriend Has 2 Chinchillas One Male And One Female. Dexter (the Male) Hasn’t Been…

My girlfriend has 2 chinchillas one male and one female. Dexter (the male) hasn’t been himself lately. Like he hasn’t moved much at all from his cage nor inside his cage, he looks like the female had gotten a hold of him at one point because he has teeth marks under his nose. But when my girlfriend or I try and open up his cage to let him out he starts “barking” at us and retreats in his dust bath. The female just started showing similar symptoms (about 30 mins ago) but I came back in the room with my PS4 and I saw her laying on her side so I checked on her and noticed she wasn’t moving but when I put my PS4 down she got back in her dust bath. Can someone help please my girlfriend is extremely depressed and she’s crying?!?

Hello-
I’m sorry I do not have a specific answer for you. All I can offer is that I would schedule a vet visit first thing. If there is a drastic behavior change, they are trying to tell you something. Good luck!

I agree with Sarah – this is a vet visit for both of them. Crying won’t help – action will. Get them in first thing this morning.

I Have A Male Chinchilla Who Is 4 Months Old. 2 Days Ago I Got…

I Have a male chinchilla who is 4 months old. 2 days ago I got a female chinchilla from someone who knew barely anything about her besides the fact that she is a rescue chinchilla. She doesn’t know her age at all. The girl also had a male which was part of the deal but I gave him to someone else. I asked the girl how long the female was with the male and she said a few months. She also has no clue if the girl is pregnant. The first day I got her I had her in her own seperate cage from my 4 month old male. I did however introduce them which wasn’t a problem. They didn’t argue or snip at Eachother and she even let him try to have sex With Her. After a while I put her back in her cage overnight. The next day I put her in the cage with him and he was very excited. But she seems more layed back. Everywhere she goes he follows. Do you think all these new things are to much for her? She stays by the food bowl for the most part and hasn’t really moved all day.

Hello,
If she isn’t acting normally it would be safest to have her seen by someone who can help assess both her health and attitude. She may need more time to acclimate to her new home and new friend. She may also be struggling with illness or disease. And lastly it is possible or probable she is or will become pregnant. All of these things need to be discussed with your vet or chinchilla expert/mentor. Please contact someone asap.

You need to have her seen by a vet to determine the cause of the issues before you can treat it properly.  Please get her there.

Hi, Today I Brought Home My Two New Chinchillas Who Are A Boy And Girl…

Hi, today I brought home my two new chinchillas who are a boy and girl from the same litter and are at 12 weeks old. I was always planning on getting the male castrated but not straight away as I have heard it is risky and he is still quite young, however he is already starting to try and mate. Should I be worried about this for the time being? Or is she going to be OK until she starts going into heat?
Thank you

Iiiii would discuss this with your vet, honestly.  You may need to keep them separated for now.

Hello,

I Am Trying To Find Out About The Different Vaccinations And Other Treatment The Following…

Hello,

I am trying to find out about the different vaccinations and other treatment the following animals need to go to an animal boarding (so they will be in close contact – same room). I’m getting lost on google though… This is what I found out so far:

Rabbit: Myxomatosis & Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD), worm and flea (and other parasites) treatment
Ferret: Canine distemper, Rabies, worm and flea (and other parasites) treatment
Guinea pig: no vaccinations, flea (and other parasites) treatment – worm treatment unknown
Hedgehog: no vaccinations, worm treatment – flea (and other parasites) treatment unknown

All the following need no vaccinations and all unsure about worm and flea (and other parasites) treatment.
Chinchilla
Guinea Pig
Hamster
Rat
Mice
Hedgehog
Degus
Tortoises
Turtles

Could someone help me answer this list? I would be very grateful 🙂

Thanks,
Jessica

ask the place you’ll be boarding them so you know exactly what they need.

maybe look into local laws? talk to other boarding facilities? surely there are laws, insurance, and licensing requirements in place…

so you say no one reinforces the law, but what, exactly, is in place? this is good to know in case an animal dies while in your care – i don’t know if Irish folks are like Americans with this, but if you didn’t have insurance you’d be at risk of litigation for negligence.

i’d also contact small mammal rescues about this issue – surely they’d have a lot more info for you.

(reptiles get zero vaccinations, and i would ensure you wash your hands before and after handling due to salmonella)

Hi, I Bought A Silver Chinchilla Cat Around 2 Months Ago, He Is 4.5 Months…

Hi, I bought a silver chinchilla cat around 2 months ago, he is 4.5 months old. He vomited and looked sick on the first day i saw him, the cat breeder said it was due to long travel. So i bought him home, after the months, he is still little bit weak(energetic when playing tho). And I realise that he has reddish grey eyelids, keeps squinting his eyes (less squinting under deem light),little swollen at third eyelids near inner part of eyes and some eye discharge, stuffy nose, snoring loud when sleep, but seldom sneeze, no sign of running nose. Also, dark spot getting more obvious at lower corner of nose, he ate lot due to playing but he drinks abnormally lots of water. I have no idea if theres serious disease on him(unable to cure), and I have another chinchilla cat, i am worried that it will infect the healthy cat too. Any medicines to cure the disease? Thankyou.

Hello. About A Month Ago I Got A Chinchilla As A Gift And I Am…

Hello. About a month ago i got a chinchilla as a gift and i am still very new at everything especially health problems. A few hours ago (about 3-4) he jumped on one of my shelves, on top of a heavy book, and since i wasn’t looking at him i didn’t see what was happening, but i heard the book falling and i went to see what happened. So i saw the book and my chinchilla on the floor and it didn’t seem like the book had fallen on him but after a minute he started running and he kind of leaned on one side while he was running almost like he was loosing his balance. I thought that he had broken a leg or something so i checked his limbs, he didn’t make any noise and it didn’t seem like they were broken so i let him go and again he lost his balance. In the next hour he was just laying down in his favorite place in the room and he wasn’t as active as before. I desided to put him in his cage to see how he will react (because he usually tries to get out on his own), but he just went to his little house and laid down and he has been sitting there for the past hours. It’s really late to go to the vet so i wanted to ask if it could be anything really serious or should i wait a while and see if he gets better?

May be something heavy fall on it…accidents like this happen often when pets go to live in new places and out of curiosity ventures into trouble. Could someone hurt it behind Ur sister? She may not even know if something happened behind her back, especially if she has young children or pet hating spouse? Please don’t go blame ur sister before u know from a vet what is wrong with ur dog. May be it was just home sick or missed u very badly.
