Approximately a month ago, Dexter was rushed to the emergency room due to a life-threatening urinary obstruction. His condition was critical, and the attending veterinarian presented his owner with two choices: find the means to hospitalize him immediately or consider euthanasia. Faced with this heart-wrenching decision, Dexter’s devoted owner refused to give up on him. Determined to save her beloved companion, she reached out to numerous veterinary clinics, seeking help.
Her perseverance led her to Jarrettsville Veterinary Center, where the compassionate team agreed to treat Dexter, regardless of financial constraints. Despite the clinic’s closing time of 8:00 PM, the staff went above and beyond. At 8:03 PM, Dexter was unblocked, and the team volunteered to keep him overnight for monitoring, ensuring he stabilized through the night. He was fitted with both a urinary and an IV catheter to administer fluids and facilitate urine flow.
Dexter remained under their care for three days. Typically, a urinary catheter is removed after this period to assess if the cat can urinate independently. After a brief recovery at home, Dexter experienced another blockage. The veterinarian performed a second unblocking and recommended a Perineal Urethrostomy (PU) as a permanent solution. A PU is a surgical procedure that creates a new, permanent opening in the urethra, allowing male cats to urinate without obstruction. This procedure is often considered when a cat has recurrent urinary obstructions that cannot be managed medically.
Despite financial challenges, Dexter’s owner and the veterinary team collaborated to raise the necessary funds.
Thanks to the unwavering dedication of Dexter’s owner and the compassionate care from Jarrettsville Veterinary Center, Dexter now leads a healthy, blockage-free life. His story serves as a testament to the power of hope, community support, and the profound bond between a pet and their owner.
Cost for this procedure was around $3400.
Dexter is happy and well ( and peeing!!)
