Linear Foreign Body

Tell Your Story:

Luna is a 2-year-old spayed Siamese cat who was surrendered to our care through no fault of her own. Upon intake, she was noted to be lethargic, inappetent, and generally uncomfortable.

Initial diagnostic workup included comprehensive blood work and abdominal radiographs, both of which were unremarkable. Supportive therapy was initiated, including intravenous fluids and broad-spectrum antibiotics. Despite these measures, Luna’s clinical condition did not significantly improve.

Due to lack of response to initial treatment, an abdominal ultrasound was performed. The ultrasound revealed changes consistent with a possible linear foreign body, including plicated intestinal loops and a hyperechoic linear structure within the intestinal lumen—hallmarks of this condition.
Given the suspicion of a linear foreign body, Luna was sedated for a thorough oral examination. A thin blue string was discovered anchored under her tongue—a classic presentation of an oral anchor point for a linear foreign body in felines. The string was carefully cut and removed from the oral cavity, and Luna is currently being monitored for its passage through the gastrointestinal tract.
Luna is showing marked clinical improvement. She is eating well, defecating normally, and engaging in normal playful behaviors. She continues to receive daily veterinary care, including serial physical exams and follow-up ultrasounds to monitor her gastrointestinal status.
