Hi, I brought my cat to the vet on Thursday. She has been straining to urinate since Wednesday night. She had also been throwing up her food and had had diarrhoea on the Thursday morning. The vet prescribed antibiotics for cystitis and I am brining her back after a week for a recheck. She had quite a lot of blood in her urine before she started the antibiotics but this has stopped since. She is still frequently going to the litter tray and is still straining and doesn’t seem to be able to get much out. She has stopped getting sick and is eating and drinking as normal. Apart from a little bit of diarrhoea on the Thursday morning she has not defecated at all and prior to that it had been at least 4 days. Could you give me some advice on when I should begin to see improvements?
Hi good morning just had a quick question , my puppy saw her vet on Tuesday morning and she was fine she got her shots and everything was well , we usually feed her 1/4 cup puppy dry food and 1/4 cup plain rice and chicken , we had however run out of the rice and chicken and gave her a little extra dry food with some ham , she now had diarrhea and a little bit of water we thing blood , we have hence stopped the dry food and just given her the rice and chicken do you think that the ham may have made her sick ?? She is bouncy and normal and she only really started the dirrea last night , she’s 2 month old
Frankly…I wouldn’t supplement with anything. If the food you’re feeding is high quality, anything extra is just that – extra – and may cause food issues in the future.
My dog didn’t get any toppers until she was reliable with eating what I give when I give it.
I would also avoid pork products, as these tend to be very high in fat. Puppies really don’t need that in their diet.
Since her stomach is not used to the ham it is very likely that the ham is the culprit. my suggestion if you run out if rice and chicken again is just do the dry food.
How much medication at the same time without damaging the bodytoo much?
So, we have a group of 22 kittens (6 months) and 2 mothers. All are treatet for ringworm (Microsporum Canis) and in 3 days are finished (only 8 showed symptoms, but since they all had contact, all had to be treated).
They were treated with Itraconazole (1 week treatment, 1 week break, 1 week treatment, another 1 week break and a last week treatment). Additionally they were bathed 1 once a week in Enilconazole.
Some of them are treated with marbocyl for cat flu right now (most likely Calici).
Additional they were tested positive for giardia and worms (Toxocaridae?) last friday after most of them developed bad diarrhea that smelled incredibly bad.
For the Giardia they get treated with Metronidazole (twice a day).
Fenbendazole is not an option, as it doesn’t help anymore most of the time.
So now I still need deworm them and make a flea treatment (as they have also fleas). I don’t want to do worm and flea medication at the same day – as that would mean that at least the ones with cat flu would get 5 medications at the same time.
Only two more days till the ring worm treatment is finished, so I thought of doing flea treatment the following day and deworming the day after that to spread the treatment a little.
Some of them are clearly not well right now, so while I would normally deflea/deworm at the same time, I’m a bit hesitant here.
What do you think?
What I have to add – one of the kittens died this morning without known reason. It was not extremly thin or dehydrated and acted normal when I saw it the first time this morning. When a collegue wanted to clean their room she called me because it would lie on the floor and couldn’t move. (I was like 20 meters away in another room) She said it made strange noises and lost poo (diarrhea). When I arrived it was already gone. The hair on his tail was poofed up, eyes/pupils wide, but no heart beat and breathing. I tried to bring it back, but without success.
It had no signs of being extremly sick. It was not affected by ringworm itself and hat no catflu. It had diarrhea, but ate well. It played, was active and so on. It showed no signs of liver problems (as Itraconazole could cause that) like yellow skin.
No one has seen what happened. I was thinking that it may has fallen off a wooden layer that are left and right to the door, right beneath the windows. The cats like to sit in it and look out the windows or wait for someone to come inside. But those are only like 1,20m in height.
So I’m even more worried that all those medicaton already was too much for that one :(.
I am assuming all medications were prescribed by a veterinarian and an exam done on all kittens? If so I would check with the prescribing Dr. I have had foster puppies who have been incredibly sick and on many medications at once at the advice of our vet. In the case of my foster pups they were very sick, the risk of not treating outweighed the risk of treating. That is a conversation though that you should have with the vet who examined and prescribed the meds. Best of luck with the kittens and so very sorry for your loss.
Thanks for your answer. Yes, all medication were prescribed by the vet of our shelter. I also planned to ask her this tomorrow when the next visit is scheduled. Just wanted to ask for other peoples experiences for similar situations.
We also had very sick kittens, where the risk of not treating them was bigger than the risk of treating – but they had other problems.
My dog has had diarrhea and frequentcy for 3 days. He is otherwise his normal self. What can I do at home?
Any dog with diarrhoea for this long needs to see a Vet. Take a sample with you. There could be some underlying cause which needs Veterinary treatment.
If it were my dog I would take him or her to see the Vet. There could be many causes each which would be treated differently. In the meantime I would feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice. Best of luck, hope your buddy is feeling better soon!
We have an ~ 4mos old puppy who testicles became inflamed and/or infected recently. He has had some diarrhea as well (was diagnosed with roundworm and treated), but otherwise has been acting fine. Blood work showed his was slightly anemic and his WBC was slightly high. Thyroid test was normal. UA was normal. Urine culture showed two different types of bacteria, but they decided it was contamination and didn’t treat one of them since it was only susceptible to an antibiotic that isn’t good for puppies. He was already on Doxy which would treat the second bacteria. Brucella screen was negative. He was neutered the other day and the testes were filled with blood. They were sent to the pathologist and a culture was also submitted (results pending). They also ran a distemper test as well as a different type of Brucella test (results also pending). Torsion was ruled out. Has anyone seen anything like this? Are there other tests we should ask about running to figure out what is causing this?

I have not seen anything like this. I suppose neoplasia, trauma and toxin are also on the list. The pathologist can hopefully provide the answer. Let us know please. Best of luck to your puppy.
They did X-rays and ultrasound and it didn’t show any masses. Trauma is still being considered, but in a week’s time things got worse, not better which seems a little unusual for trauma. No one has mentioned toxins yet – I’ll ask about that. Thanks! I will let you know what the pathology report says (probably be a few more days still).

I need a better description of “everything”. Please. Have you brought a fecal sample to your vet for analysis? This is the best place to start. In fact I usually recommend three serial exams before I rule out parasites in kittens. I also think the diet can be tweaked. But I need to know the age of your kitten before I can comment on this. Pleaee give me more info
Hello! My 4 month year old Lab had diarrhea last night and seems to go every 2 to 3 hours. I tried her on some rice and she vomited. She acts ok. She still will play then nap, which is kinda normal. After the rice her pooped looked green?I wonder if anyone has some advice to avoid dehydration? How soon should I take her in?
If your puppy is 4 months old, this is an emergency. Get her to an emergency vet NOW.

Hello, I have a newborn kitten. Its an orphan, and honestly seems to be about 5 days old. I have questions regarding its stool, yesterday the stool was more formed but today its diarrhea I am worried.. its like a yellowish brown diarrhea that seems to be a bit slimy if that makes sense. I have been feeding it KMR.

In case of Puking Foam , Her digestive system isn’t good. But blood is coming?!?? She got a stomach cancer. Keep calm and visit a vet as soon as possible if you want to save her.
I rescued an abandoned 10 day old kitten. Now 16 days old. just starting have diarrhea and now sore red bottom. Appetite is waning. Also meows constantly as if in pain. Please help!
Of note, I took the kitten to the vet at 11 days, and she tested negative for parasites in stool. I am using the correct formula.

Thank you for your responses. I rang the emergency vet today and she told me that it would take a few days until she is urinating normal again and as long as she is eating and drinking she should be ok. She no longer has blood in her urine, however I am still quite worried as there doesn’t seem to be much improvement in the volume of her urine output and she seems to be straining a lot with only a a little dribble of urine each time. She is also licking the area after every time she tries to urinate. Other than this her temperment seems normal and she is lively.
Hi …if you are in any way concerned please take your cat back to the Vet before her check up is due. If she is still straining to urinate and has not defacated for 4 days it could be something other than cystitis.
Take a urine sample to the Vet with you and perhaps ask for blood tests to check kidney function etc. I hope she recovers soon.
If she still has blood in her urine and is straining to get somethign out I would visit the vet again. Maybe she has bladderstones or something else partly blocks the way.
Same if she can’t defecate. Sometimes it takes a while after diarrhoea until the colon starts working again normally, but if shes eating normal since 4 days and wasn’t able to use the toilet since then I would get that checked, too.
I am very very worried that the cat is unable to urinate which is an emergency. Please go immediately to the vet now!
