Hello, My wife is currently in Kuwait with their family. They have a cat and they believe it has been bitten by a bug. The cat has started acting very strange; trying to bite it’s tail, breathing very heavily. It’s face and paws have become very red, its sweating too. Because it is Ramadan over there they cannot access any help for the cat for the next 4 hours. Any idea what it could be, and what they can do? They are worried the cat may die.

MY cat has been sick for 5 days with a fever. No vomiting no diarrhea except for a little on the second day. He has a fever, he’s drinking a lot, lethargic, not grooming. I took him to a vet who gave him something for the fever and an antibiotic shot. He’s eating and drinking which is good but the fever is not going down. The vet prescribed Fevadol which has paracetamol in it. We are in a country with no good vets and no real access to pet medication, but everything I have read says that paracetamol is poisonous to cats. I would give anything for him to get better, but there are no vets that I trust here and I am so confused on what to do. He’s obviously fighting an infection but the vet said he doesn’t seem to have a URI, he has no signs in his chest and no discharge from eyes or nose. I just don’t know what to do and it’s breaking my heart watching him in pain. please help.
He’s a 4 year old male.

Dawn Ferara, DVM Normally I would tell you to follow the doctor’s instructions but it seems paracetamol is acetometaphin which is very toxic to cats!!! However, without examining your cat it is impossible for me to really give you any advice. My recommendation is to try and find a vet you trust because your cat needs treatment.
Good luck

D A Thank you for your response. I know he needs treatment, I am very scared for him, but as I said there are no reliable vets here. Is there something over the counter that could bring down his fever?
-
Dawn Ferara, DVM No there really isn’t.
My cat has lost weight and hes still eating and drinking. His third eyelid is visible and his urine in an orange color and foamy.
She is an inside cat about 15 months old never been outside

Anonymous Vet trip to make sure she doesn’t have a UTI or something else going on.
How many litterboxes does she have? Is she spayed? Is there any way she could have been ambushed leaving the box? Have you used any particularly smelly cleaning solutions near the litterbox? Do you scoop it regularly?
-
Crystal Turnage We have a all the cleaning supplies in the kitchen and her litter box is cleaned everyday. I have an appointment to get her spayed her appointment time hasn’t arrived yet. To my knowledge she hasn’t been ambushed. Her litter box is right outside my kids room
-
Anonymous Hmm…I’d wonder if one of them exited while she was in the box, and that startled her.
General rule of thumb is one box per cat plus one – so if you have a single cat household, try a second litterbox. Clean the kids’ room with an enzyme cleaner to discourage further unwanted behavior.

Anonymous (Also she could be going into heat, which could cause a UTI. Seriously, vet time.)

Crystal Turnage Thanks

hello,
I want to get information about health issues of hybrid kitten from persian and a tabby cat?How often is it possible to see health problems( like kidney failure) at a persian-tabby cat hybrid? thanks in advance

Anonymous Just for future reference: this isn’t a hybrid. The word “hybrid” indicates a mix of a wild species and a domesticated species. What you’re talking about is simply a mix, and the risks are about equal to those of a purebred. In short, you’re taking a risk no matter what…chances are the owner(s) of the parents have not done any sort of health testing and do not know the overall health of either cat’s pedigrees.

efsun sanders thank you so much..
-
Dawn Ferara, DVM Breeding 2 different breeds together gives you hybrid vigor. This term basically says that mix breeds tend to have less health problems and live longer than their purebred parents. Although there is always a risk hybrids of 2 purebreds are usually healthier.

efsun sanders thanks for your interest…

Anonymous Dr. Ferara, have you read newer evidence questioning the theory of hybrid vigor? http://animalbiology.ucdavis.edu/Accomplishments/PDF/Inherited%20disorders%20with%20dogs.pdf

The situation is getting worse; it has bitten its tail so much that it is bleeding very badly.
Krista: Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately they cannot access any services for the next 4 hours. I guess until then they will have to hang on.
Does anyone have any advice on how to stop the cat from biting itself / bleeding in the meantime???
Thankfully the cat has been fully vaccinated. It had calmed down a bit, but if it starts again then restraint may be the best option. Thank you for your help and advice. I’ve tried so many places, and this is the only one where I have had positive advice!
They managed to go to the vet after waiting 4 hours. During that time he had calmed down a bit and gone very quiet so no restraint necessary! The vet said it some sort of bite and they gave him a shot. They said all should be fine. Scare over! Thank you for your advice 🙂
