That’s fairly large for a small animal.  I’d say you need a vet and the sooner the better. It could be a insect bite, cyst, infection, tumor,  etc..

You very likely broke his jaw, if not something worse.  He needs a vet – this is an emergency!

My Rat Is Less Then A Year Old, For Some Time We Had Our Rats…

My rat is less then a year old, for some time we had our rats in a room with an open window, seems like one of them has caught a cold. The problem is there are no good rat specialists available todaytomorrow, and I’ve heard that it is important to respond to such symptoms immeadiatly. Please advise me on how can I either minimise the danger of waiting for the specailist’s schedual to clear up, or, maybe, how can I treat this myself. Thank you, I really hope you can help me, my gf won’t stop crying!

Hello,
I recently bought 2 pet rats about 4 days ago. I read about how amazing they are and how sweet and cuddly they are but my rats arnt showing much of that. The dominant one is very skittish and has bitten our fingers where they bleed. They don’t seem very excited to see us at all, Im not sure if one of them is even eating. They fight a lot and the dominant one bites the smaller ones tail but no blood no foul. I’ve just heard so much great things and was so excited to get them but now I’m kind of disappointed.

You have them for only 4 days. Sadly most rats from pet stores don’t have goof experience with humans. They nearly never see a human besides cleaning their cages, feeding or taking them away from their cage mates. They are not used to handling. They need to learn that you are good to them. They need to get to know you. My rats loved cooked eggs, noodles or potatoes (all withour salt). I would place small bits in front of them or use a spoon to hold it in front of their nose. So they don’t bite you, but learn… Read more »

This is important: were they feeder rats or were they hand-raised from a breeder?  Keep in mind, also, they need time to get used to you.  Rats are terrifyingly intelligent rodents and they require a gentle, patient hand.

Also: are they both male?  Are they both intact?

ah, so they haven’t been hand raised. they need to be tamed. be GENTLE with them, and please be patient. this might help: http://www.afrma.org/trusttraining.htm

i would also set up neuter appointments for them, as they may continue to fight if they’re intact.

Fancy rats are prone to tumors, and I’d be willing to bet that’s what this is.  Please get her to the vet TODAY about this.

So Lately I’ve Been Thinking About Getting Another Dog. My Current Dog Is A Chihuahua…

So lately I’ve been thinking about getting another dog. My current dog is a Chihuahua and possibly Rat terrier mix; he’s about 13 years old. Before I got him he used to have another chihuahua he always hung around with, but that was when he was around five. He only barks when there is someone making noise outside or that get too close to our fence, the same goes with barking dogs or ones that pass by our house. Other than that he is very friendly with strangers, especially when they come into our yard. He does however, have an issue if dogs come onto his territory, like most dogs do. He has never been to a dog park and has gone to a pet store a couple times, either for shopping or to be groomed. Our neighbors have a dog who barks at everyone and everything, even if I open the back door for a second. My dog occasionally fights with him through the fence, and by that maybe every few weeks. My dog doesn’t bite, growl, nip, scratch or anything at strangers when they come over, even if it’s our pest control. I’m not sure how he will react when we bring another puppy home? We’re either thinking of getting a border collie, lab, doberman pinscher or possibly an italian greyhound. Any tips on what to do when they first meet? Do you think he’ll be alright with another puppy? Any advice helps, thank you!!

This is how my rescue recommends you introduce a new dog to your home (and I do this with all fosters coming to live with my pack of 4 terriers, one of which is a Cairn/Chihuahua mix): Before the new dog arrives pick a place in the home for him to live most of the time for 3 days.  I use my guest bathroom some times, and other times I use my craft room – both have tile floors so it is easy to clean up any accidents that may occur with the new dog.  Inside that room I place… Read more »

Has he ever been around a puppy?  Are you willing to separate the dogs and rotate which is out, if things go south? A warning about dobes, because I have one – they are NOT gentle with littles.  You’ll have to work very hard on teaching a dobe puppy to be gentle with smaller animals – our girl is nearly three and still occasionally stomps my cat.  They’re also tough puppies and are quite literally a full time job until they’re around 2 years of age…I’ll happy talk more about the breed if you want, but I don’t want to… Read more »

I have a rescued Rat Terrier I have had since November. We are a good match for each other and things are working out well. I have noticed that, when I take her for walks, she often sits and turns around and around on the ground.

It would also mean she has worms – so a trip to the vet for a complete physical would be  the best thing.

Some types of worms are hard to detect with the naked eye, but they do make for an itchy butt.
