We Want To Keep A 2 Year Old Rat Terrier Who Is So Sweet. She…

We want to keep a 2 year old Rat Terrier who is so sweet. She wants love or to play. The cats, not. One cat stood her ground, the other hides all the time. How long should it take a cat to get used to her, the dog? Anything we can do?

Krista, once again you are right on the mark!  I just want to toss in my 2 cents that many terriers breeds were developed to hunt in packs, so once you have a terrier pack (2 terriers IS a pack) you have a dangerous dynamic mixing in any prey animal.  And cats are prey animals to terriers!   So, follow Krista’s advice on setting up a cat only space, and be sure to let that sweet pup know that cats are not to be chased, nor hunted.  After a time the cat will probably start to torment the poor little… Read more »

I hope they are now all best friends, or at least tolerating each other. There were great suggestions that may have helped. I wanted, for all who read this, to add a few other suggestions if you are still having trouble or need behavioral help in the future.  Reiki and flower essences are two totally safe treatments for emotional issues (and physical issues as well). I would get attuned to Reiki at a local class (if you send me your location I may be able to help you), then you can help emotional issues, pain, healing, detoxing and much more. … Read more »

Lots of great advice, just to add that having a place up high, like a cat shelf or cat tree/tower set up inside your home can help the cat too. Cats also like to be up and survey everything. It also gives your cat a get away from the dog if it needs to.

We Have A 1 Year (and 2 Month) Old Mixed Breed Dog (rhotweiler And Rat…

We have a 1 year (and 2 month) old mixed breed dog (rhotweiler and rat terrier mix). We crate trained him when we first got him and he did great. We slowly allowed him to spend more and more time out of his crate until he was good all day out of his crate while we were at work (6 – 3). He got to the point where he didn’t want to go in his crate at all anymore. So, for the last 7 months he has been allowed free range of the house and has done a great job. No accidents and no chewed up things. In the past 3 weeks he has chewed numerous rugs, shoes, pillows and anything else he can. we try to pick everything up but the rugs and pillows stay out. We began filling treats with peanut butter and freezing them and we give him one before we leave. We go on two long walks a day and he gets plenty of cuddle and play time. I didn’t really want to crate train him after he has had all of this free space as I felt he would see it as punishment. But I am unsure of what else to do.

Hello, Thanks for asking your question, it is a doozie! But a good one. OK, here’s what think and am concerned about. I’m going to try to answer them as you state them and try to bulletize the answers to keep us on track. OK, to begin with, I think that crate training is a wonderful training tool. It is a wonderful life long training tool. (see my Pawbly blog for crate training)…Crate training is NEVER meant to be for punishing, but it is meant to be for training. Training to not eat your belongings as this is destructive and… Read more »
