I have devised what I call the puppy test although it really works on any age dog.  I like to put a puppy upside down on my lap and see how they react.  A very tolerant puppy will just lie there and take it all in.  A less secure puppy will squirm a bit and try to right themselves, a shy puppy will lie there but look very stiff and uncomfortable.  A puppy that squirms and tries to bite your hand to get you to let go so they can right themselves is more headstrong and independent and will require… Read more »

In my experience, with a regular, garden variety UTI, with proper treatment, you should start seeing improvement in couple days after starting antibiotics.
Our vet, when giving a treatment, always provides an outline of expected outcome too.
How long is the UTI lasting? If symptoms persist for more than a week, without an improvement, I’d go back for another recheck, another urinalysis and I’d run culture also.

Hi Dallas,,,

Just to add to the great advice Micha gave….When you adopted her, did she pluck prior to your adoption? Does your macaw have any enrichment in her area (chew toys, things to destroy, healthy foods, etc) Is she in a cage all day, or is she out and have a place to hang outside of her cage? A large majority of plucking is due to stress and boredom.  Micha’s advice was awesome and I also suggest taking her in to an avian vet to make sure she is parasite and disease free.

Good luck!!

The sad reality is that plucking (and other forms of self mutilation in parrots) can be due an almost limitless supply of reasons. It can stem from lack of enrichment (boredom), stress, mental disorders (like depression and anxiety), malnutrition, or any number of medical reasons, including but not limited to allergies, mites, pain, hormones, etc.  It could very well be due to giardiasis, but in my experience, this usually causes them to pluck directly over the crop area. The only way to try to diagnosis the cause for the plucking is to rule out ideas with a qualified avian vet.… Read more »

Justin,

Definitely use the unscented bedding. They have very sensitive respiratory systems …if you are using care fresh they make unscented. (Never use cedar bedding as it is an irritant and has shown to cause some liver damage in studies.) The hay shouldn’t be causing the issue, unless it is dusty/moldy. Glad you are taking them to the vet tomorrow. Good Luck!!

From what I know about Petland, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was an URI, especially if they have nasal discharge.

Timothy hay really shouldn’t be irritating their noses, but scented bedding could. Some kinds that you can buy actually aren’t very safe, such as red wood shavings because it contains oils. What bedding are you using?

Hi Justin,, Congrats on your new pigs!! They make awesome pets! Without seeing or hearing your pigs it’s hard to say. They do make a lot of noises, squeeks, chirps and sneezing type sounds as part of the “norm” for them. Do you notice and discharge or anything in their nostrils? Do you have hay for them? …if you do make sure that it is not dusty. Also, bedding can also cause sneezing. Esp if you are using pine shavings. Make sure to keep the cage or area you are using for them clean too. It’s always a good idea… Read more »

My 8 year old female dog has experienced what I would call muscle spasms in her hind quarters. I pick her up for comfort, and later when I let her down she seems fine. Any idea what may be happening?
