Sixteen year old Yorkie has a dislocated hip but walks around well. Vet says due to age best to treat with pain meds because surgery is risky. How do I tell if she has any pain?
Hello Krista and Sarah, Thank you so much for responding. We are going to talk with a surgeon about the FHO with Michigan State University. Will let you know. You do a great service for so many people and their loved pets. This is GiGi!!
Dr. Kim (Surgeon) from Michigan State University sedated Gigi to get x-rays. While examining the x-ray the decision was made to replace the hip into socket. Dr. Kim has much confidence that it will stay in due to the fact he tried to manipulate it back out, the scar tissue in the socket was minimal and Gigi is a non active dog. She has a sling with her leg attached to her chest that will remain on for two weeks.
Hello,
If you can afford going to a surgeon for this is usually not a risky surgery to do. I would ask for a referral to a surgeon and get a second opinion. I think an fho might be a great option. (Femoral head osteotomy). Let me know. Please.
Hi there- I would guess that if your dog is in pain that you will be able to tell by changes in behavior and/or vocalizations. You know your pet best- I would just JES pna close eye. Best of luck.
