Do primary care vets often do referrals to oncologists in the USA or do they just handle cancer patients themselves.

It seems to me that it depends on the practitioner. When dealing with cancer, it is always important to ask for a referral and work with an oncologist every time. Ideally, before any treatment or even extensive diagnostics are done. Particularly when it comes to prednisone treatment.
