Presume dog ate something outside. Face swollen. Behavior running all over and whining, obviously uncomfortable. Wondering if I can give him diphenhydramine (benadryl) as antihistamine until I can get him to vet in about 2 hours.

Hello,
If it happened acutely (like within the last few minutes) it might be an insect bite or some kind of local allergic reaction. Diphenhydramine is a relatively safe medication that we use for these kinds of cases but unfortunately I can not prescribe it to you unless you are an active patient. Please call your vet immediately or the local ER. They can guide you. If there is any sign of trouble breathing go immediately to the Er.
