Hi, my two year old shih-apso mix went swimming in a cold river about two days ago. Since then, he has been weak, has runny eyes, and is coughing up saliva. He has been getting plenty of rest and we even gave him some soup, however, nothing seems to be working. Just some added information, the day before he has gone swimming, he had been scratched by and outdoor cat. It drew a bit of blood, but that was it. Now we are a little confused and extremely worried as to what to do with or dog. Thanks in advanced!

Infection of sorts from the water? Infections from the cat scratch? Combination of the two? Did the water look in any way suspicious (greenish, slimy …?) Or, frankly, it could be something else all together. Either way, I’d see a vet today to get it figured out and addressed. While runny eyes can happen from allergies, coughing saliva and being weak are symptoms of a serious issue.

Unfortunately rivers are full of polution as well as being very cold. Perhaps not a good idea to let your dog swim in one.

Please take him to the Vet he could have anything…an infection from the cat scratch (their claws do carry a lot of bacteria) or an infection from the river or both. He may even have a severe cold or worse from swimming. Please don’t leave it he needs treatment now.

In my opinion yes rivers carry a lot of pollution whether green and slimy or not, I wouldnt let my dogs swim in one…and cats claws and mouths for that matter carry a lot of bacteria.

Whatever the issue is I agree this dog needs to be seen by a Vet.
