If a parakeet won’t step down on her leg and when she tries to perch her one toe doesn’t curl the bar, is this a sign of sprain or broken toe? Does she need a vet visit or X-ray? Should we just wait and watch , it’s been five days.

Hi Cindy,

There could be lots going on. How do your parakeet’s feet look? Are they lumpy or smooth? Any swellings? Are the nails trimmed? Any changes in your parakeet’s diet or eating habits?

Sometimes other things going on can cause this. I once had a parakeet that had a tumor on it’s kidney, and the tumor was pressing on a nerve that affected it’s feet, causing it to have problems with perching.

Is she otherwise acting normally with eating , drinking and her feces look normal?

When in doubt take her to your vet.
