My 6 year old neutered male cat, Stephano, has gotten an abcess on his lower back. I noticed the wound as a scab that caused him pain when i touched it, so i smelled the wound for more information. it smelled terrible! i picked off the scab to reveal a small hole in his skin filled with pus. the hole itself i would say is about half a centimeter or less. My mother is a nurse and she applied Mupirocin 2% to the open wound after cleaning it with a damp cloth and squeezing the pus out. I still have an e-collar from when my other cat got spayed, he’s wearing that now. The wound still smells putrid, i want to clean it better but it seems to really hurt him, he barely let me trim the hair around the wound. Am i doing the right thing for him? should i take him to the vet? he is still eating, and his ears aren’t hot or even warm. Thank you for reading this and i hope you can give some advice!

Being that it is very painful, is fillled with puss and smells so bad, I would think he needs antibiotics. This means a trip to the vet. Good luck.??
