My little stumpy cross kelpie has been xrayed & diagnosed as having two torn ligaments on either side of her right hock. She can & does still use the leg & honestly does not yelp or act like she is in any pain. What do you recommend please.

Is she taking anti-inflammatories? Ligaments take time to heal I would restrict her to short walks on a lead for now.

Hi Sandee….I really hope our Vet Krista comments on this. Personally and I don’t want to speak against a Vet…but yes it seems radical to amputate too. Ligaments heal though do take a long time. If its that bad then cage rest and anti-inflammatories/painkillers or even steriods maybe…..I would have thought…but I’m not a vet!! Could you get a second opinion from another Vet maybe? I would before I did something as drastic as amputate anyway.

So two vets have told you to amputate? Then her ligaments must be in a very bad state, but I don’t understand if shes not in any pain. I’ve had a pulled ligament in my foot and its agony lol…..but I would still not amputate not yet. Perhaps you should ask for a referral to a Specialist?

Just a thought…one of my Weimaraners years ago trod on a nail and severed a ligament in her foot. My Vet at that time operated but it wasnt a success. I had her referred to a Specialist, he opersted again and after 6 weeks of not using the foot she was fine apart from a bit of a floppy toe. It was very very expensive surgery with the Specialist though. If you are going to have it operated on then I really would go to a Specialist to have it done..if you can raise the cash or shes insured. My… Read more »

Possibly he thought that…but you need to talk to him about it…..and ask if thats the reason he suggested amputation. If you are off round Oz there is always the risk that she may suddenly get worse I guess. Im in the UK and my Cocker Spaniel has recently had Specialist surgery for a slipped disc…it was that or euthanasia. It cost £6000 UK pounds plus a huge bill from my Vet for xrays etc before he was referred. Its really silly money Sandee. My boy is insured but it didn’t cover all the cost. I’ve still got him though… Read more »

Pleased Krista replied! Just to say I think the hock support will come in very useful especially when you are on your travels if shes suddenly in pain. Don’t forget to take anti inflams and painkillers for her too, just in case. ?
