Our lab has torn his ACL…are there different types of surgeries?? does something like this need to be fixed? what are the pros/cons to getting it fixed or NOT getting it fixed.
he is a rescue so we don’t know his exact age but he is at least 8, maybe 9…is it even worth getting it fixed with his age??
any and all information would be helpful, i’ve never had a dog with this injury.

Oh and one more thing — as a large dog, if he is now using his other leg to bear his weight, there is a good chance that something could happen to that leg/knee too.

Hi Jenn- So sorry about your pup and his injury. My yellow lab had the same issue last year. You don’t always have to surgically fix the ACL but that is the treatment of choice because without the surgery to fix the ligaments, your dog will continue to have an unstable knee and will be prone to arthritis. If your boy is overweight, you can alleviate some of the issue by having him loose some weight.
