I work from home 4 days a week, so I’d be around and able to spend time with a dog on most days. But the one day a week I go into the office, I’m gone for about 12 hours, sometimes more (if I run errands or go out after work). If I were to get a small dog, and litter box train it, would this be ok for the day I’m gone for so long? Or is a dog just out of the question for my schedule? Also, are there particular breeds that would be more ok with being left alone for a whole day like that, or breeds that I should stay away from?

Dogs can get use to anything.  I agree with the others that the best solution would be a dog walker or day care, but they may not be willing to take on a dog that comes so infrequently, or their hours might not work for you. You may want to train your dog to use the shower stall as a back up — I had a dog once that came from an fifth-floor walk-up in NYC and they trained the dog to use the shower stall so they did not have to take him out first thing in the morning,… Read more »

Christy, since you’re gone just one day a week, the best solution would be to get a pet sitter, dog walker or use doggy day care for that day. No dog likes to be alone for that long (though they can get conditioned to be ok with it psychologically) but also they have physiological needs that need to be met. Litter box could work but I think it could be confusing for the dog. Having somebody take him/her out on that day would be best solution for the dog. Doggy day care can be awesome too.

Hi Christy, I agree with Jana,,having a dog sitter or pet walker come by twice that day or taking to doggie day care on your 12hr day would be awesome!! It would give your dog change of environment and chances to be around other dogs too. There are lots of services like this around no adays and usually  they offer packages for routine customers. No dog likes being left alone that long. I don’t like the idea of litter box training,,,just having a dog that goes outside is so much better. As far as breeds that may work best, it just… Read more »
