A healthy body has healthy skin. In other words, the coat and skin are a window into your dog’s health. It could have a nutritional reason; skin needs good amount of quality protein and essential fatty acids. Or it could be reflection of something not working properly in your dog’s body, such as the thyroid. I am always “thankful” for outward signs such as this one because they tell me something is going on that shouldn’t. I’d start by having your vet evaluating the dog as well as the diet and go from there.
Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disorder in which the dog becomes sensitized and reactive to certain environmental allergens, such as pollens, or pest allergen such as fleas, or a food allergy such as grains or typically it’s a combination of sources. The inflammation is caused by a baseline of histamines in the dog’s skin.
