Hi Krista
My 5 year old neutered male is currently at the vets after suffering from a blocked urethra and overfill bladder.
He has been drained and Crystal’s flushed out but its been 3 days and my vets have advised that his bladder keeps over filling and not regaining muscle control.
Do you have any advice for me, how long until muscle control is normally back?

Hello,
Depending on a lot of factors, like age, weight, length of time he was blocked or dealing with this or even if there is ,concurrent disease elsewhere this is not uncommon. Why medications is he on and why isn’t he on, or trying medications to help bladder emptying and help muscle control. Also I teach my clients how to palpate the bladder to assist in emptying and monitoring it at home. I am working on a project about this. Would love to add you to the data pool. Let me know if you are interested. Good luck
They have him on an iv I’m not sure what meds he’s on but they have given him something to help try get muscle tone back. I hadn’t noticed signs prior to having him admitted. He dissapeared from home Wednesday which was out of character when I found him Thursday. I noticed straight away something wasn’t right, he wasn’t walking properly and raced him to the vets. Hes been there since 1pm Thursday it’s now 11.30 pm Sunday here. I’m still holding hope but the vet here said muscles normally go back to normal within a day or two. I… Read more »
He normally appears to be in great health, diet previously was dry food.
Kicking myself now after researching the link between dry food diet and bladder infections
Blocked cat. Urinary blockage Feline.
In my hospital we keep a urinary catheter in place for a few days to help let the bladder rest and regain tone. Has that happened? Is he in normal shape and condition with normal nervous system responses everywhere else? No signs of trauma? Normal walking, anal tone and defecation? Normal bloodwork. So many questions. Go back to your vet and ask them all of these and whether a referral is indicated (which is more expensive just so you know). Keep me posted. 🤞
The catheter was removed after the initial draining of the bladder, since then they have been manually stimulating urination.
I will be going back tomorrow so I will make sure I ask the questions. Thank you
Spoke to his current vet, she said she doesn’t leave catheters in because they can get knotted.
He hasn’t defecated yet since he hasnt been eating much. No signs of nervous system damage. Tried using litter tray while I was there but not passing urine. I will attach his treatment received so far
