Hematoma. My 10 yr old. dog. just had surgery a week and half ago and the base of the ear is filled back up, hot to the touch and painful. Im worried she needs surgery again but I feel like. my vet screwed up and I cant afford another 600 bucks to fix it. If he did the surgery right shouldnt it have a drain spot left open and should he fix this again on his dime. Should I look for a new vet? In 10 yrs my dog has never had problems with her ear. Im so upset to see that its filling back up a week and a half later. Shes miserable 🙁

Krista, We have no clue what caused the hematoma. There was no infection and we never saw trauma cause to it. I took her back in today. While there the vet noticed there is gunk in her ear (was not there before, he looked when performing surgery) Also when there and I removed her No flap ear wrap she shook her head and tore a stitch when the the ear was able to drain. Vet suspects the no flap ear wrap created an area for the ear to now get infected and also wasn’t keeping the war secured. So aby… Read more »
UGH…. sorry for all the typos above
Krista,
My last response isnt showing 🙁
I’ll tru again.
We don’t know what happened. I got home from work and noticed her ear all wonky. I checked her ear and noticed a small “pillow” Got her in the next day. Dr checked her ear canal (no infection), prescribed prednisone and sent us on our way. Over the nexr week ot got. huge. Took her in again and surgery was done that day. He checked the canal again and saw nothing. Then took her back. for. post op.recheck and. they removed her bandages and. put the no flap on
Figure out why she is shaking her head and address that. In my opinion if I think it is allergies I try a steroid, antihistamine or try apoquel. These cases can be frustrating. But a red ear is an inflamed/irritated ear and these cause head shaking which causes hematomas. You have to relieve whatever is causing the irritation. I start there. Not just surgery or ear wraps.
Hello,
In my opinion every aural hematoma will fail IF the underlying cause has not been discovered, addressed and treated. No matter what you do or how much you spend. Please call your vet and ask for relief for your pup. I wish you the best of luck.
Hi there. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. My first thought, is to call the vet and let them know this happened. Get some relief for your dog- antibiotics? Pain meds? Then I would ask their thoughts on whether a drain should have been used, and what the next step would be. You have to trust your vet. If you aren’t happy with the results of your discussion, you should probably seek a second opinion elsewhere. I hope things work out.
