Hello! I have a 11 week old Chug, Chihuahua/Pug mix male that’s been having dark stool. He’s on a Soft foods only diet (the meat is slightly on the darker coloring side) and he drinks filtered or bottled water. He’s very active and energetic. His stool is just dark in coloring but it is firm yet soft (he’s had diarrhea due to puppy chow we gave him once but he’s off of it and has his stool back to normal again). His stool is sometimes light in color when we fed him this one brand of food.

I was just wondering if this should be any cause of concern, he has been dewormed and vaccinated so I’m not sure if it might be that he still has some worms or if it may be the food we give him because the only thing is that the stool is dark colored (but still brown). Most dogs I’ve seen have a light brown stool or chocolate colored and I want to know ASAP so I can take my baby to the vet or even emergency if he needs it. Thank you very much in advance!

Hello Mary Lou Thanks for your question. In general fecal color is influenced by food type and general health of the dog. If you have been changing the food that might influence the color. Or you can try a different age and breed appropriate food and see if that changes it. Another good resource is your vet. Make sure that your puppy is up to date on everything and checking a decal will help rule out intestinal worms. Dark stools can be a sign of bleeding in the gi tract so a visit to the vet isn’t a bad idea… Read more »
