I know heartworm is more common in the summer months. What is it and what can I do to prevent it from affecting my dog? Thank you so much!

Heartworm is a parasite, transmitted by mosquitoes, that takes hold in the heart. There can eventually be hundreds of these worms there. It is a horrible disease and the treatment is very dangerous and worse than the disease itself.

You need to start by getting your dog tested to make sure he doesn’t have any. Once cleared, there are a number of preventives that kill the baby worms that the mosquitoes transmit. That is the prevention used.

keep your dog on a heartworm preventative, purchased from the vet.
