My dog had to have surgery for a infected anal gland. The vet just cut it open & drained it. Is this normal? What causes the glands to get infected. I know sometimes they have to be excreted at home or by a vet but never had a dog with infected glands before. His bottom looked like he had a big pimple with a white head in the middle of it.

Hello,
There are multiple ways to treat this. Some use oral antibiotics and warm compresses. Others surgery. Others place drains. If you have questions about what your vet is doing or recommending ask them. Or ask for a second opinion from a different vet if you think that it will help you and your cats care. I hope this helps.
