My gerbil has a long strand of discharge issuing from his rectum. A piece of poop is attached to the end of the strand. What is wrong with him and what can I do until I can get him to a vet?

Hi Matilda,
It’s pretty hard to tell you what is wrong with him without seeing him or learning more about him.
But, I would say that sounds abnormal.

It could be hair, possibly? is the discharge liquid or solid?
Is your gerbil eating? Drinking? Other poop look normal or just this one piece?

Hi Matilda, I don’t think your gerbil is going to die. If you are worried, please take him to a vet. If the poo looks normal, it probably is. If it’s worms, then your vet can treat it very easily. If he’s eating that’s great! Gerbil’s don’t drink a lot of water like a rat or hamster will,.. so you may not see him drinking often.
