My family really wants a dog I work from about 7:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m on weekdays. I have weekends off but Is that too much time to leave a dog home alone all day?

The simple answer to this question is yes, it’s too long. What about the family? Since they want a dog, they are gone all day too? If so, when do they plan on spending time with the dog then? If the family isn’t going to be involved with taking care of the dog, I don’t believe they are ready for one. All that said, there are things such as dog sitters, dog walkers, doggy daycare … But getting a dog is a commitment. that really depends on a lot of factors.

would you be the sole caretaker of this dog?  what breed(s) would you consider?  would you crate the dog when you aren’t home, or would they be free in the house?  would you give the dog tons of attention when you *are* home?

The answer to your question is yes. Its far to long to leave a dog alone. Please wait until you have more time and don’t work such long hours to get your dog…..leaving a dog for 10 hours a day is cruel.
