We believe the wound is self-inflicted. We noticed last night and the blood had already dried when we did, so we may have noticed too late. We washed the area with saline solution and today, we treated it again with hydrogen peroxide and an ointment. It’s swollen and the area around it is red. It also looks a little discolored, but that may be from the peroxide? Is it infected?

Hello, Please do not use hydrogen peroxide, that is very irritating and can cause the skin to become worse. You can just use some warm soapy water and then clear water and pat dry. It looks infected, but hard to tell from the picture if it is a cut or if it’s a tear? It’s best to have this looked at by your vet if possible before it gets worse. It could have been a tick? Did you look for a tick or was there a tick in this area? Best to have a vet see your dog if possible.… Read more »

I can’t really tell from the picture but it doesn’t look that serious. If he’s not bleeding out and he’s acting normal and the wound is healing, I don’t think you would have to go, but then again, if you’re in doubt it’s best to get it checked.
