I have 2 dogs, rescued them 2 months ago, they are not allowed upstairs at all, the staffie x whippet continues to come upstairs during the night, roughly every 3 hours. We have a stair gate but if this is left closed he will bark and whine at it, so we leave the doors open and when he comes in to us we send him back downstairs and he goes down with no problem. Really need help to stop him coming upstairs completely. He is walked 2 times a day.

i’d consider walking him more than that as well as working on daily obedience training.  give him a safe place to stay, like a crate or a gated room.  he might make noise at first but dogs adapt fairly quickly if they’re in a routine.
