My dog tore back a toenail, exposing the quick. The nail is still attached at the top. Can this heal on its own?

HI Scot, Ouch!  What a great picture – thank you – it really helps to see what is going on.  It looks like the nail is completely removed from the nail bed and it appears to be completely dead.  Broken nails will pull away from the nail bed and cause pain or discomfort; just like when a human nail comes away from the skin.  So, you want to take the nail off completely.  You can do it yourself – just pull it off real quick (like removing a band-aid) or have your veterinarian do it for you.  After that your… Read more »
