My dog has long nails and I know your supposed to cut them then wait for the quick to recede before you cut them again. I was wondering how long does it take for the quick to recede? Weeks? Days?

I cut my dog’s dark nails every few days, just a little at a time.  If a foster dog comes to me with long nails I cut a little every day until they get back to where they should be.  I read an article recently in the Whole Dog Journal that indicates that the quick does not really recede so you just have to be careful and work slowly to get the nails as short as possible.

I usually wait 2-3 weeks and then clip them again. It also depends on the dog, some nails grow quicker depending on many factors. If your dog has white nails it’s easier to see the quick than the dark nails so I always just take the tips off and am more conservative on dark nails.
