I have a 12 year old cat that has never had a dental cleaning, but needs one…his breath is pretty stinky. I’ve been hearing lots of stories on various pet forums about their pets going under anesthesia and not waking up. I’ve heard so many stories lately, that I’m getting really freaked out about having any of my pets under anesthesia. What causes an animal to not wake up? I know dental health is very important…can you ease my fears on anesthesia? I’m turning into a major worry-wort in my old age ;-). Thanks!

Hello, I know that anesthesia is concerning for you and we vets take great care and precautions to try to insure that every pet that goes under general anesthesia is safe and monitored very closely. Certainly every anesthetic event has it’s inherent risks but your vet can go over those with you. We only recommend anesthesia when we believe that the benefits risks outweigh the risks. Many dogs suffer significant health consequences and shortened life spans because they have significant dental disease.
