My brother has a 14yr old yellow lab named Allie. One of her ears flaps looks like a filled hot pocket,and is painful and hot to the touch.

Allie’s owners seem to think that it will go away on it’s own. What is this called, what causes it, and what is the treatment process? Thank you for your advice!! ~kelly

Hi Kelly, sounds like it could be a hematoma. A hematoma is an accumulation of blood due to damaged blood vessel(s). Certainly not something I’d wait for to go away on its own. Firstly, if it is painful, I wouldn’t want my dog suffer. It’s certainly very uncomfortable. Secondly, these often develop from excessive head shaking, which means there is likely an ear infection going on as well.
