My Bichon who is 6 years old had an inflamed disk in her back. The acupuncturist suggested adding magnesium to her diet. What would be the recommend daily dosage for a dog?

Hello Laura, Thank-You for your question and I am sorry to hear of your dogs injury. I am not trained in alternative medicine, so I did a little research to see if I could help you find the answer to your question. With respect to disc injuries I found some information on magnesium being used for its calming effects, and beneficial properties in degenerative joint disease, disk, and spinal disorders. Laura,  without more information, it is difficult to make a lot of suggestions.  Krista gave you good advice on the magnesium. If your dog has any symptoms from the inflamed disc – weakness in legs, incoordination, crossing legs especially in the rear, dragging the toes, bladder or bowel control – you really do need to see an integrative veterinarian. Sometimes there are no symptoms and the acupuncturist detects “energetically” that there is a weakness/inflammation in a disc.
