I just adopted a 7 year old male cat and he is not using his litter box. im told he has never had a problem with this before from what i was told by the shelter staff. is there anything i can do to get him to use his litter box?

Limiting the freedom is the best. Keep in small quiet room and spend a lot of time there with him. Use the same litter and size of box they used at the shelter.  Anitra Frazier, in The Natural Cat, has an entire chapter on litter box issues and a few pages on bringing in a new cat, in addition to an entire life span of ways to have you new cat live a long life (I knew one at 34!) of good health costing you less money. Keeping him in a small room with easy to clean floor and rugs may be the start – especially if you spend lots of time with him. I would also strongly recommend finding an integrative veterinarian with whom to work forever. This is a person trained in many different approaches, including using conventional drugs only when absolutely needed.
