My 11 year old lab has had a chronic black wax build up. My vet has prescribed steroids, but it has not improved. My next step is to take her to another vet to be examined. I have heard this is a common problem in labs. What could this be?

We rescued a goldendoodle who had a black discharge from her ears  and weeping from both eyes that turned her fur black (she is a white dog).I found thru process of elimination  that she was allergic to wheat and chicken.  I went to a no grain no chicken dry dog food and I m also making a mix of ground beef, veggies, beans, and tomatoes to add to the dry food.  I use a supplement  that contains necessary vitamins and probiotics daily.  She is now a bright eyed energetic girl with no allergy issues and no black discharge.  Hope this helps
