My dog, Max, was recently diagnosed with diabetes. We are still trying to find the right dose of insulin and were making progress until yesterday. His sugar was back up to 471 yesterday when 2 weeks ago it was 275. We know cataracts are already forming but this morning before 4am he woke me up. I thought he had to go outside but when I got him, realized he wasn’t opening his left eye. When he does open it, it seems rolled back and is red. His third eyelid is also visible. The right one is better but also seems like it might be bothering him. I contacted the vet for walk in hours today but wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue and what it might be.

My 6 year old lab mix had TPLO surgery to repair a torn CCL on September 10. Prior to surgery, his liver enzymes were elevated but after 2 ultrasounds and bloodwork, they were unable to identify why. Because of this he cannot take anti inflammatory drugs to help with pain and took longer to be cleared after surgery. He was finally cleared on 12/11/19 and was doing really well. About a week and a half ago, he started limping again. We can’t pinpoint anything he did that would cause a limp. We haven’t let him fully run and don’t let him off his leash hardly at all. I do have another follow up appointment with the surgeon scheduled but wanted to see if anyone else experienced something like this. Thanks!

Krista Magnifico Hello,
Lots of things can cause a limp post op. The best advice I can give is to keep him calm and leash walk only and see the surgeon ASAP. If he is acting quiet, depressed, lethargic or not eating call your regular vet and have him seen immediately.-
Jen Behler Post author Thank you! He is sleepy, but not lethargic. I think that is because of the gabapentin. He has always been a picky eater but I believe he is eating and drinking normally. We have been keeping him on a leash and shortened walks. His appointment with the surgeon is Wednesday.

My 80lb dog is on carpofren and cephalexin. He is supposed to get 2 cephalexin and 1 carpofren every 12 hours. Tonight my husband and I got our wires crossed and both of us gave the dog his prescribed amount so essentially, he got a double dose. Will this make him sick?

Krista Magnifico Hello,
If you can call your vet right now and ask for their assistance. If they are closed call the pet poison helpline and they can instruct you on what the toxic levels are and what to do from here. I am not particularly concerned about the antibiotic but the carprofen might be an issue. I don’t know about your dogs health status or how much he has gotten in the last 24 hours. This is important to understanding how much is too much. -

Thanks for responding. I did call my vet and they did not seem concerned. They said not to give him another dose of the carpofren until Sunday and to skip his morning dose of the cephalexin tomorrow. His carpofren pills are 75mg and he has had 2.5 in the past 24 hours. He is otherwise healthy but on antibiotics for a skin issue and the pain med for an injury to his hind leg. He’s 5 y.o. and 80lb. He had the pills around 6pm and is currently acting normal.
My dog has a drain in his ear for an aural hematoma. It has been in for a week and is supposed to be in for 2 more but it appears as though it may be coming out. What happens if it comes out before we get to the vet?

Krista Magnifico Call the vet ASAP and see if they can adjustbit so it doesn’t come out prematurely. I don’t know what kind of drain they used but often I can resecure it in place quickly and easily. Let me know what happens

We actually go to JVC and have an appointment Monday (10 days from puttin it in)for the drain to be checked. I will call today but I know you have limited hours. Thanks for responding!

Me again. I think that as long as he is acting completely normal otherwise AND not rubbing his face or eye (which can cause trauma or damage to the cornea (think about all the doctors advice to not run your eyes)), then you are probably fine to wait until we open at 1. If he is rubbing his face please place an ecollar on him. You can always make a quick make shift one with either a large price of plastic or thick poster board or even a bucket (do a google search for homemade ecolllars people get creative. And you just need one for a few hours we have them at the clinic), and then come in. For dogs with a history of allergies I would recommend a saline flood (like the kind you do if you get a toxin in your eye). Nose to the sky and flood the eye with strike saline or clean two water (cool). To wash out any irritants. Or give diphenhydramine orally. I want to hold off on your pup due to the diabetes. I also am a little concerned about Horners. You can look that up online too. Dr Ahrens has been notified that she will see you at 1230. You can email me anytime if you need anything. Stay safe!
